About Kyori-do Karate

Kyori-do Karate, founded by Sensei Luis Costa, is a distinguished martial art that seamlessly blends the powerful techniques of JKA Shotokan Karate with the analytical depth of Cuong Nhu. With over 35 years of experience, Sensei Luis Costa has created a style that not only honors the precision and efficiency of traditional Shotokan but also incorporates the holistic, principle-based philosophy of Cuong Nhu.

The core philosophy of Kyori-do emphasizes continuous self-improvement, balance between physical strength and mental resilience, and the development of strong ethical values. Practitioners are guided by the Kyori-do Creed, which includes principles of dedication, respect, courage, and modesty.

What Sets Us Apart

What Sets Us Apart

Kyori-do Karate is distinguished by its commitment to developing not only technical skill but also character. Our curriculum is designed to be both simple and profound, allowing students to build a solid foundation while exploring advanced techniques. The inclusive and supportive community fosters a sense of belonging and encourages personal growth both inside and outside the dojo.

The Kyori-do Creed and Philosophical Principles

Kyori-do Karate is guided by a set of core principles and the Kyori-do Creed, which collectively form the foundation of our martial arts philosophy. These principles are designed to cultivate not only skilled martial artists but also individuals who lead with integrity, respect, and humility.

Philosophical Foundations: Kyori-do Karate blends traditional martial arts philosophies with modern understandings of human potential. It emphasizes a balance between “hard” and “soft” aspects of training, teaching students to be strong and resilient while also adaptable and compassionate. Strength and virtue are key elements, combining physical power with strong character and ethical behavior.

By embodying these principles, Kyori-do practitioners not only excel in martial arts but also lead fulfilling lives marked by honor, integrity, and continuous personal growth.

The Kyori-do Creed includes the following values:

Respect and Integrity

Respect and Integrity

"With respect, I will treat all students and instructors." Respect is a fundamental value in Kyori-do Karate, fostering a supportive environment where everyone is valued and encouraged. This respect extends to all members of the dojo, ensuring a harmonious and cooperative atmosphere.

Dedication and Inspiration:

""With dedication, I will improve myself and inspire others." This principle emphasizes the importance of commitment to personal growth and using that growth to positively impact others. By dedicating oneself to training and character development, practitioners set an example that encourages and motivates those around them.

Courage and Integrity

Courage and Integrity

"With courage, I will defend truth and reason." Courage in Kyori-do involves standing up for what is right and using one's skills to uphold truth and justice. This principle highlights the moral responsibility that accompanies martial arts training.

Continuous Improvement:

Continuous Improvement:

"With practice, I will strengthen my body and spirit." Regular, dedicated practice is essential for building both physical strength and mental resilience. This principle reflects the idea that martial arts training is a lifelong journey of growth and self-improvement.
